The hair washing setup hack that finally worked
Most days, I don’t even notice the gear anymore. I’ve got medical equipment tucked into nearly every corner of my house — my disabled child’s hair washing setup taking over my shower, syringes filling my kitchen drawers, scales cluttering every counter…
For bathing we have one of the standard-issue medical shower chairs- the blue mesh variety insurance covers. This might sound ridiculous, but… I use it in the shower, like you’re “supposed” to.
But today, standing in my kitchen with shampoo in my hands , washing my own hair, I realized something that made me want to scream: I had been doing hair washing for my disabled child the hard way for years — and I didn’t even know it.
P.S. If you want to see the bath items I actually use, I saved them here.
Why I Stopped Washing My Daughter’s Hair in the Shower
The number of times I’ve contorted my body in a slippery bathroom, soaking wet, just trying to rinse shampoo out of my daughter’s hair — I could cry. Lower back pain, wet floors, and frustration have been part of our routine for far too long.
And then today, it hit me: What if I just placed the shower chair over the kitchen sink?

Using the medical Shower Chair at the Kitchen Sink – A Simple Adaptive Hack
I took the chair off its shower base, and carried it to the kitchen. It took two seconds. I collapsed the legs, laid the chair flat, supported fully on the countertop with only the top head portion directly over the sink -problem solved. Finally.
I washed her hair. It worked. It didn’t hurt. No crouching, no slipping, no soaked socks. Just clean hair- a happy kiddo and a back that didn’t feel wrecked for the rest of the day.
As soon as I realized this hack was actually working, I just kept saying, “Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Are you kidding me?” on repeat. I was floored and immediately FaceTimed my mom while my daughter was still in the chair. I had to show her. She was freaking out — in the best way. It was one of those rare moments where something finally clicked, and my family who’s been in the trenches with us felt it too.
I used to stand in the shower in a sports bra, gym shorts, and socks — bracing for the splash zone just to get her hair washed. It was a whole production. Towels on the floor. Shampoo in my eye. My clothes soaked by the end of it.
Now? With this setup, we are both fully dressed, and in less than 20 minutes, her hair is clean , brushed and we’re able to head out the door. No drama. No back pain. Just… done.

Here’s the thing — no one hands you a guidebook when you become a special needs parent. You figure it out by living it. Falling apart and rebuilding. Trying something 10 different ways before one finally sticks.
There will always be someone ahead of you — someone whose ideas and workarounds feel like a lifeline. But don’t forget this: you’re also ahead of someone else. And when you live your life out loud, when you share even the tiniest idea that helped you? You just might change their life too.
the hair washing setup that finally made sense
I never thought washing my disabled child’s hair could be this simple. I wish I’d known sooner that the sink sprayer and her chair were all I needed. It didn’t take new equipment , just a different approach.
If someone had told me 5 years ago about this hack, I think I would’ve cried. It’s the little things in this journey- the things that you get used to , the ones you stop questioning- that hit the hardest when they finally get easier.
If this helped, I’m so glad. Still figuring this out? Me too- always
xoxo,
